Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are not a new technology, but in the UK only account for a small percentage of heating systems.
In Scandinavia and some other areas of Western Europe, heat pumps current account for the majority of installations.
Rather than burning fossil fuels to directly heat water, where the efficiencies are approaching 100% in modern installations, heat pumps "move" energy that already exists and condition it to be suitable for use within either heating or hot water systems.
Heat pumps are generally around 250% to 450% efficient depending on how they collect energy and the specific application.
Air sourced heat pumps
Air sourced heat pumps are rapidly gaining popularity as an alternative to oil boilers where mains gas is not an option.
Large volumes of air are passed across a heat exchanger, where the energy is collected. A refrigeration system, similar to both refrigerators and air conditioning systems, then concentrates this energy to supply warm water to the heating or hot water system.
Careful consideration has to made to the application of an air sourced heat pump in terms of property suitability and the type of emitter being used.
Due to a desire to keep the flow temperatures as low as possible, it is best practise (but not exclusive) to use underfloor heating in conjunction with all heat pumps.
Ground or water sourced heat pumps
As the name suggests, ground or water sourced heat pumps use the ground to collect the energy for the heating system.
The selection between different options depends on availability of sufficient ground or access to large water volumes such as a lake near the property.
Where ground available is limited it is possible to drill vertical boreholes for the collection system, but this does require the use of specialist equipment.
Once the energy is collected, the remaining system is almost identical between all heat pump systems.
